Just as the recent storm tore through the north-west the previous evening, the home side blew the visitors aside at the Etihad Stadium. It was a statement three-nil victory for Andrée Jeglertz’s side due to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a result that truly announced their leadership claims as they strengthened their position at the league summit.

Consecutive Setbacks for Manchester United

This scoreline signalled successive Women's Super League defeats for Marc Skinner’s side for the first time since spring 2024, putting them a sizable gap off the table toppers with their championship aspirations severely dented.

United’s ability to balance league and continental football with a small team has been a widely debated topic since they qualified for the European competition. Looking at the schedule, it always felt like this was the period that would seriously challenge this fortitude. Unfortunately for the visitors, they appeared tired throughout, the historic win against Paris Saint-Germain clearly having had an impact.

Lineup Adjustments

Skinner had tried to freshen things up with a handful of alterations. Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Janssen and Galton all added vigor, although the omission of the high-performing Malard to the sidelines raised a few eyebrows.

City, in comparison, have no similar loading worries. The City coach made one adjustment from their most recent win over the Toffees with Hemp making her initial starting appearance since healing from a fitness issue.

Dominant First Half

The most obvious substitution came from Skinner at the interval as Malard came on for Terland but by this time it was futile to change the course of the game. Former Manchester City player Park came most likely to score, striking the upright, but the visitors were lacking in ideas and were unable to register a one shot on target.

The home side, on the other hand, could have added to their lead when a delightful Vivianne Miedema pass sent Shaw away only for her to fluff her lines but it mattered little to the winning team. After failing to beat any side who ended above them in the prior term, Jeglertz’s side now have victories against Arsenal and Manchester United to place them in a commanding standing after nine games.
